Dutch girl, 12, gives birth on school trip

Read in Khmer

A 12-YEAR-OLD Dutch girl gave birth while on a school trip, sparking a police search yesterday for the father of the child.
The girl, from Groningen, 114 miles northeast of Amsterdam, complained of stomach pains March 22, during a day out with classmates.
Teachers realized the girl was in labor and called an ambulance. Medics rushed to the scene, and the 12 year old delivered a healthy baby girl in a nearby building. The young mother was then taken to the hospital but has refused to name the father.
Family members said that the schoolgirl's father previously sexually abused another older daughter and served two years in jail for the sex crime, according to the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
The girl was living with her father and brother after he won custody following a divorce from their mother, who was originally from Suriname, a former Dutch colony in South America.
The girl's stepsister, 30, told the newspaper, "I warned him. I am shocked about what happened."
Dutch police said in a statement yesterday: "The girl got pregnant when she was 11, which in itself means there has been a criminal offense. Article 244 of the Penal Code, sex with a minor under 12, is punishable. In addition, there are now [circumstances] reported by the Child Protection Board. Taking these two circumstances, the police is now investigating who the father [of this baby] is."
The girl was due to go into foster care once she was released from the hospital.

Celebrities You Wouldn’t Like to be Sitting Next To On a Plane

Traveling by plane can be a pain in the neck with all those troubles during the check in or simply the crowds. At such moments many of us have wished to have their own private jet that can take you wherever you want.
However, not all celebrities have a private plain and sometimes they travel by coach in order to feel normal and down to earth. But where celebrities are there is always some drama. This is the list of celebrities you wouldn’t like to be sitting next to on a plane.

1. Lady Gaga

Imagine sitting next to Lady Gaga. It would look/sound something like this “LG: Hey you little monster move over YOU: Excuse me LG: You’ve heard what I’ve said! You’re under my command.” Or at least something like that.

2. Kim Kardashian

This model/actress/producer likes eating greasy and smelly burritos on the plane. It has been reported that her co-passenger had a pretty uncomfortable flight.

3. Naomi Campbell

We all know that this top model has a cross temper, but it wasn’t a pretty site when she snapped at an airline employee for losing her luggage. I wouldn’t like to have been in his shoes.

4. Paris Hilton

The story about Paris Hilton smuggling drugs through the airport customs and hiding it in her vagina can really make you fall of your chair laughing. You just have to look at the picture and see that special criminal-accomplice bond. No one would like to be sitting next to her when the package breaks.

Japanese man takes on tsunami in scuba gear and wins

 Read in khmer

The disaster that has happened in Japan with an earthquake followed by tsunami is going to take many months to clear up, and many years for people there to deal with. The death toll keeps rising and a lot of what we hear is bad news. But within all the sadness are a few triumphs and stories of downright determination.
43-year-old Hideaki Akaiwa is one of those triumphs. When the tsunami struck his home city of Ishinomaki he was at work, but knew his wife of 20 years was at home with no way to escape the raging torrent of water. All the advice said to get safe and stay safe, but Akaiwa knew his wife could not do that and it was up to him to help her.
So while others fled the area, Akaiwa found himself some scuba gear and dived into the water. We’ve all seen the power of the tsunami and its ability to move vehicles as if they were toys and destroy buildings like they were made of paper. But Akaiwa made it back to his home somehow where his house was flooded.
His wife was on the top floor quickly running out of breathing room, so he shared the respirator and got her out and to safety. But Akaiwa wasn’t finished, his mother was also trapped in another house so he went and found her too, saving both the women in his life.
Everyone out in Japan helping to keep the people without homes safe and taking part in the clean up are heroes, but this guy is something else. He continues to dive every day in the hope of finding others who may still be trapped.

TREEPODS Carbon-Scrubbing Artificial Trees for Boston City Streets

 Read in Khmer

With the earth’s population ever growing, air pollution and air quality is a major issue for many countries around the world.  Air pollutants can lead to respiratory related illnesses in humans and animals, create acid rain, and deplete the ozone layer.  Actions such as, carpooling, reducing the use of fossil fuels, and simply turning off a light when leaving a room are all ways that reduce harmful CO2 levels in our atmosphere.  There is also a natural source that eats away at harmful CO2 gases and that source is trees.

Trees act like nature’s lungs.  They take in CO2 gases from the air and then use those gases for energy during the photosynthesis process.  A byproduct of photosynthesis is oxygen.  Over the course of a year, one tree can absorb up to 13 pounds of CO2 gases. The loss of trees in cities has had devastating results.  Heavy levels of CO2 gases in cities create thick smog and affect the natural ecosystem of the land.  These concentrated levels of CO2 gases create a hostile environment for trees and plants, making it difficult for them to grow properly.
Knowing the benefits, Dr Klaus Lackner, Director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy at Columbia University, came up with an innovative idea to reduce CO2 emissions in urban environments.  Taking from his daughter’s prize winning 8th grade science fair project, Dr Lackner designed a machine that would pull CO2 from the air.  Lackner’s daughter’s project proved that CO2 could be extracted from the air by using a fish tank pump and a battery. Lackner took his daughter’s idea further by designing his structure to act like a living tree.

Inspired by Dr Lackner’s discovers, in Boston, MA, the Boston Treepod Initiative, developed by Mario Caceres and Christian Canonico of Influx_Studio from Paris France, in collaboration with ShiftBoston are proposing to use this environmental friendly technology to help curb CO2 gases in the city.  By using biomimicry, or drawing inspiration from nature, Influx_Studio developed their tree-like structure to be powered by both solar and kinetic energy.  Their artificial tree mimics what real trees do.  It scrubs CO2 from the atmosphere and emits O2 and uses its own power to do so.

OMG, FYI are now in the dictionary LOL!

In this week’s dictionary news, we welcome some words we never actually thought would make it as official words. The Oxford English Dictionary announced yesterday that for the March 2011 release of OED Online, it has selected  a few “noteworthy initialisms” for publication. These words include “OMG,” “LOL,” and “FYI.”
Initialisms are abbreviations consisting of the initial letters of a name or expression. OED’s Graeme Diamond said in release that these initialisms “are strongly associated with the language of electronic communications,” such as email, texting, social networks, blogs, and so on.

wha is this picture?

Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest.  I started drawing ...
I showed my masterpiece to the grown-ups, and asked them whether the drawing frightened them.

Fetal Development : Week 6 to 8

Read in Khmer

Week 6

  • The arms and legs continue to develop - These limbs are stretching out more and more. Later on you will be feeling those feet and elbows up close and personal right in your bladder!
  • Brain is growing well - Did you know that over the course of the remaining months that your baby's brain will develop over 100 billion neurons? This is just the beginning!
  • Lenses of the eyes appear - If you could catch a glimpse inside, you would notice your baby's appearance becoming increasing like a newborn's.
  • Nostrils are formed - The position of the nose seems to shift into its proper place as well. Soon, the nerves running from the nose to the brain appear.
  • Intestines grow - Initially these are actually located outside the baby's body within the umbilical cord.
  • Pancreas - Your baby is now equipped to deal with digestive enzymes and take on processing the insulin and glucagons the body needs to function.

Week 7

  • Elbows form - Again, taking a peek inside you could see your baby's fascination with bending and flexing. Later you will swear you can enlist your child as the star of the next "Karate Kid" movie!
  • Fingers start to develop - These digits often become your baby's first toy!
  • Feet start to appear with tiny notches for the toes - It is fascinating that at less than a half inch, your little guy (or gal) already is leaving "footprints" on your heart!
  • Ears eyes and nose start to appear - Although they may resemble an alien life form, these all "shift" soon enough into a more normal appearance.
  • Intestines start to form in the umbilical cord - Did you know that initially the intestines are not formed inside your baby's body?
  • Teeth begin to develop under the gums - Thankfully, right now you won't be dealing with teething pain!
Week 8

    • Cartilage and bones begin to form - At the end of this week your baby will have already completed 1/5th of the journey 'til his birthday!
    • The basic structure of the eye is well underway - The position is more "newborn" like already!
    • The tongue begins to develop
    • Intestines move out of the umbilical cord into the abdomen.
    • Body grows and makes room - Two months along and this little one is growing inside and out by leaps and bounds!
    • The fingers and toes have appeared but are webbed and short
    • Baby's length (crown to rump) is 0.61 inch (1.6cm) and weight is 0.04 ounce (1gm)

    Fetal Development ; Week 5

    • First heartbeats begin - If you have an early ultrasound you may not be able to recognize this tiny being as a baby, but there is no mistaking what it feels like seeing your child's heartbeat on that screen. That rhythmic beat is echoed in your own heart.
    • Umbilical cord develops - This is your baby's lifeline in utero. It bears the responsibility of pumping in oxygen, removing waste, and supplying the necessary nutrients for the remainder of your pregnancy.
    • Blood is now pumping - All four heart chambers are now functioning, insuring your baby's body will receive all it needs over not only the remainder of your pregnancy but throughout life.
    • Most other organs begin to develop - Your infant's lungs start to appear, along with her brain. Already your little one is preparing for a quest for lifelong learning!
    • Arm and leg buds appear.

Facebook now has its own social keyboard

With the growing popularity of Facebook, more gadgets are starting to ship with buttons dedicated to the social network. We’ve already seen smartphones get a blue Facebook button, but now we have a keyboard dedicated to ensuring quick access to a range of common Facebook pages.

The Social Network Access Keyboard (S.N.A.K.) has been developed by Social Keyboards whose sole aim is to make social networking easy, and in doing so sell a lot of keyboards. S.N.A.K. requires a piece of software be installed on your system in order to work, but the benefit of this is when you log out the Facebook keys are disabled on the keyboard meaning no one else can get quick access to your account.
