In this week’s dictionary news, we welcome some words we never actually thought would make it as official words. The Oxford English Dictionary announced yesterday that for the March 2011 release of
OED Online, it has selected  a few “noteworthy initialisms” for publication. These words include “OMG,” “LOL,” and “FYI.”
Initialisms are abbreviations consisting of the initial letters of a name or expression.
OED’s Graeme Diamond said in release that these initialisms “are strongly associated with the language of electronic communications,” such as email, texting, social networks, blogs, and so on.
