Techno Charity

Help Us Bring Clean Water to Save Lives

TechnoCharity Project

25 May 2006

Who we are and what we are doing

We are 18th generation engineers graduated from the Institute of Technology of Cambodia1, known also as Sala Techno. We are now organizing a charity project named Techno-Charity aimed to improve the quality of life of Cambodia’s poor people living in remote provinces. Our action mainly targets those who are badly in need for help.
Poor access to water leads to many health problems and it is an hindrance to economic
developments. There is an urgent need of potable water in many provinces of Cambodia.

Therefore, our first action is to improve the humanitarian situation by focusing on people who do not have access to pure water or could not afford it. That means helping to build access to safe drinking water.

Members of our generation contribute their help (in-kind and cash) to run this project. However we are in short of fund. Therefore we are now seeking external support from everyone in order to successfully implement this project.

How the project is going

We will debut our charity action by doing small projects such as well constructions. We will later extend our action to larger ones once we have enough resources and experiences.
In our charity project, we begin by doing the feasibility study of the project. We investigate the situation of people, the degree of their need, the estimated cost and the time needed to implement the project in an optimal way. When the study is concluded, we start raising fund to support our activities. Once the needed fund is collected, the project will be implemented as planned.

It is also to be noted that our action is totally by volunteer and solidarity and it does not involve in politics.

Our first project

Kamong Speu province is chosen to be the first place to debut our first project. Kompong Speu, located 45 kilometres southwest of Phnom Penh, is the 12th largest province covering over 7,017 square kilometres. It has the 8th largest population in Cambodia with close to 598,882 people, over 89 communes and more than 1,319 villages2.

Kampong Speu is one of the poorest Cambodia’s provinces. It also suffers a lot from
dryness. At the present time, there are many places in Kompong Speu where water supplies
are badly needed for everyday life.

Our group went to visit the places in the province and we decide to select Veal Pong
commune of Uddong district as a place to help.
Detail about location
– Province : Kampong Speu
– District : Uddong
– Commune : Veal Pong, located at 55km from Phnom Penh, with 27 villages comprising
of 34 communes.

Statistic

Veal Pong Commune has the population of 12536 with 6331 females in which 414 are
widows.

Standard of living

Most of the population of Veal Pong commune are poor people and they live in the
extremely difficult situation. The worst of all is that they have no access to clean water. A certain numbers of combined well and pump wells have been constructed by CODEGAZ, and another large pump well has been donated by UNICEF. However all of them have been built since 80s and are now not working anymore. The people there have to go from 1 to 3 km in order to bring water home. Moreover the transportation is very difficult as the route is in the worse condition.

Urgent need
Recognizing the need for clean water for people in the village, we think that well would be the right thing for them. There are many types of well : combined wells, pump well, etc,. Among them, combined well is the best suited.

Detail about combined well

No Material Unit Quantity Price/Unit($) Total($)
1 Drill 1 1 130 130
2 LF for digging m 9 10 90
3 Bus, with 1m diameter piece 20 4,5 90
4 Cement bag 7 3,75 26,25
5 Sand m3 1 8 8
6 Gravel 1*2 m3 1 16 16
7 Gravel 4*6 m3 1 10 10
8 LF of plate form 10 10
9 Brick piece 150 0,0375 5,625
10 Transportation fee of Material 10 10

Total 396

LF : Labour fee

Well water analysis and Fee of transportation
The amount of risk from a drinking water contaminant depends on the specific substance and the amount in the water. The health of the person also matters. Some contaminant cause immediate and severe effects. Therefore we need to check the well water in the laboratory.

1 Analysis of water 24 24
2 Transportation fee for 2 supervisors 31 31
Total 55

Therefore :
– Pump well : 250 + 55 = 305$
– Combined well : 396 + 55 = 451$

Budget
– Type of well to construct : Combined well
– Total cost : 451$
– Current budget : 180$
– Budget needed : 271$
